In the world of parenting, peace of mind is priceless.  This is why, as a new parent, you want to ensure your baby’s safety and well-being at all times.  For this, a video baby monitor is a necessity.

Then I’ll cover everything you need to know about making your choice, including what features to look out for, privacy concerns and other frequently asked questions (plus! – we’re going to show you some of the cutest baby pictures on the internet!).

I understand that every family has unique needs and preferences, so I’ve considered a wide range of products to help you find the one that best fits your lifestyle.

🏆 The Best Overall Video Baby Monitor

Nanit Pro Smart Baby Monitor – Wall Mount & Travel Accessories

Nanit Pro Smart Baby Monitor & Wall Mount & Travel Case – Protective Hard Shell Carrying Case & Flex Multi-Stand – Travel Baby Monitor Accessory

Key Highlights:

  • Excellent audio and video quality
  • Breathing detection
  • Humidity and room temperature display
  • Growth tracking
  • Detailed sleep analysis and insight reports
  • Built-in nightlight and sound machine
  • Background audio allows you to hear your baby even when the app is closed
  • Multiple mounting options

The Nanit Pro Smart Baby Monitor is a top-of-the-line baby monitor camera that offers a variety of features designed to keep a close eye on your little one. I’ve selected it as the “Best Overall Video Baby Monitor”, as it checks most of the boxes and has demonstrated the most dependable technology.

Generally speaking, the Nanit Pro camera is offered in either a wall-mounted model or a floor-stand model. This package I’ve linked to, however, comes with a wall mount as well as a travel mount.

The Nanit Pro also features a breathing band that wraps around the baby’s chest to track their breaths per minute and sends real-time alerts to your phone. All this is done without extra sensors, so you don’t have to worry about potentially harmful components.

Like most WiFi baby monitors, you’ll notice that the Nanit Pro doesn’t have a parent unit. Instead, you’ll need to use the Nanit app on your phone to monitor your baby. This would have been a deal breaker for me, except that it gives you the option to monitor audio at all times, whether you have another app open or it’s in sleep mode.

Fortunately, the app has a well-designed user interface with plenty of features. Aside from a crisp, clear video feed from your child’s crib, you’ll also have a read on the temperature and humidity of the nursery, the ability to communicate with a push-to-talk feature, and control of the built-in nightlight and sleep sound machine. You can even snap photos!

The Nanit Pro definitely isn’t the cheapest option on the market, but overall, it’s the best baby monitor available. And, if you’re anything like me, you can’t put a price on your baby’s safety.

  • Monitors temperature, humidity, sound, and light for optimal nursery conditions
  • Advanced encryption
  • Real-time alerts without disturbing the baby’s sleep
  • Enhanced night vision
  • Accessible from anywhere using the mobile app

The Miku Pro Video Baby Monitor is a standout choice for parents seeking advanced technology in a WiFi baby monitor. This smart monitor uses military-grade technology to track your baby’s sleep and breathing patterns without any wires or wearables.

The Miku Pro connects to your smartphone, providing an excellent audio and video-quality feed from your child’s room. And with the option to add additional cameras, you have the ability to view multiple WiFi monitors.

One of the Miku Pro’s unique features is its SensorFusion technology. This captures your baby’s breathing, sound, and movement patterns without a wearable device, providing peace of mind for parents.

Miku Pro Contact-Free Breathing & Sleep Tracking Monitor - Real-Time Smart Baby Monitor & Wall Mount - HD Video Baby Monitor with Camera & Audio, Night Vision, Humidity & Temperature - Two-Way Talk

The monitor also offers 2-way communication. My only gripe is that you’re limited to 15 seconds in that respect. It is a push-to-talk feature, though, so it’s not that big of a deal really.

Despite being on the pricier side, the Miku Pro’s advanced technology and free cloud storage make it a worthwhile investment. That’s why I’ve selected this as our best WiFi video monitor.

The Best Local-Video Baby Monitor [No Wi-Fi]

Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro

Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO Video Baby Monitor, 720P HD Resolution 5" Display, Patent-Pending A.N.R. (Active Noise Reduction), Pan Tilt Zoom, and Optical Zoom Lens

Key Highlights:

  • Operates independently of WiFi
  • Active Noise Reduction feature filters out background noises
  • High-definition 720P video resolution playback
  • Parent Unit with 5″ improved LCD screen.
  • Pan/tilt/zoom capabilities and interchangeable lenses.
  • No need for an app
  • Extremely secure

The Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro is the best baby monitor if you’re seeking a secure local-video baby monitor that operates independently of WiFi. This monitor is valued for its reliability and durability, offering a great signal range and clear images – both day and night.

The monitor provides high-definition 720P video resolution playback, ensuring ultra-clear video quality. The large 5″ improved LCD screen offers enhanced brightness and sharper colors, making it easier for you to keep an eye on your little one.

The DXR-8 Pro camera also offers full control with its pan/tilt/zoom capabilities and interchangeable lenses. While it comes equipped with a zoom lens, there is also a wide-angle lens sold separately. The monitor allows for up to 6x zoom when optical and digital zoom are used together.

Using its Active Noise Reduction capability, the DXR-8 Pro effectively filters out background noises, allowing you to hear your baby more clearly. It’s particularly useful in removing unwanted sounds from fans, air purifiers, humidifiers, air conditioners, and static.

With a full charge lasting about 24 hours, the Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro has an excellent battery life. You can also purchase a backup battery if you choose to do so.

Keep in mind, there are no apps and no smart features. That is a selling point for some parents though! Also, while you can add up to 4 cameras, the video monitor’s parent unit doesn’t support split-screen viewing.

All around, the Infant Optics DXR 8 is a solid and dependable baby monitor camera.

The Best Baby Monitor For Sleep Tracking

Owlet Dream Duo Smart Baby Monitor

Owlet Dream Duo Smart Baby Monitor - HD Video Baby Monitor with Camera and Dream Sock: Only Baby Monitor to Tracks Heart Rate and Average Oxygen as Sleep Quality Indicators. Sleep Tracking and Prompts

Key Highlights:

  • Extensive sleep training information
  • Tracks sleep, heart rate, oxygen level and movement
  • Measures temperature and humidity
  • Comfortable cotton “Dream Sock”
  • 130° wide-angle view and 4X zoom
  • Convenient smart app

The Owlet Dream Duo Smart Baby Monitor is a high-end system that combines Owlet’s signature Dream Sock with a baby monitor camera and app. It’s particularly suited if you’re interested in sleep training and want extensive data for that purpose.

In a nutshell, this device tracks oxygen levels, heart rate, movement, and overall sleep patterns. The Owlet also measures the temperature and humidity in your baby’s room.

The camera, offering a 130° wide-angle view and 4X zoom, is easy to use and very portable. You can also purchase the camera separately, offering a fairly stripped-down version of a Wi-Fi baby monitor.

The Dream Sock, which is made of cotton and comes in three sizes, features a small Bluetooth-connected sensor, which reports data back to your smart app. The sensor is easily removed for regular washing.

While, like many video baby monitors, it doesn’t host a handheld parent unit, the Owlet Duo comes with a mobile app for both Android and iOS.

The Owlet Dream app is well-designed and a breeze to use. Featuring the live stream at the top, followed by an attractive visual to display your baby’s sleep status, you’re able to glance at your phone and immediately see what’s important. The bottom of the app features a few tabs, which include a history section, user guide, account settings and a Dream Lab tab for sleep training options.

Baby sleeping in crib.

Owlet really tries to set itself apart with its Dream Lab feature, though. This is where you can use the app to help your baby with sleep training. It offers a weekly guide section for up to 4-month-old babies, and for slightly older babies, it provides actual Dream Lab content with daily guides, weekly tips, and an overall sleep plan.

Despite its strengths, the Owlet Dream Duo has some shortcomings. There can be a tremendous amount of latency between the camera and your smart app. Also, it tends to lose connection more than I’d like.

Editor’s Note: An important thing to note is that the Dream Sock, which was once sold as the “Smart Sock”, was pulled from the market due to FDA concerns about the sock being marketed without the necessary regulatory approvals for a product that claimed to track blood oxygen levels.

The “Dream Sock” marked the product’s return, but didn’t include the blood oxygen monitor which had caused them problems with FDA compliance. The feature, however, has subsequently returned and marketed as a sleep quality indicator, with the Dream Sock pivoting to become a “sleep-monitoring tool”.

The Lollipop Baby Monitor is our top pick for the “Best Portable Baby Monitor With Camera [For Travel]“. This WiFi-operated video baby monitor stands out with its unique lollipop-like design, making it not only functional but also a fun addition to your baby’s room.

With its flexible mounting arm, you can post it up just about anywhere and throw it in your diaper bag when you’re ready to leave. Its flex arm allows you to mount it in any one of five different ways, making it extremely versatile.

The Lollipop Video Baby Monitor offers a 1080p HD camera and quality night vision, providing clear visuals of your little munchkin. Unlike some models, you can also record videos to store for future viewing (This is a paid feature though).

The Lollipop app is intuitive and user-friendly, allowing you to check on your baby from virtually anywhere. It also allows you to play lullabies, talk with two-way communication, and set the audio to ON while you close your phone.

Safety measures include cry detection, breath-per-minute monitoring and crib barrier alerts. This allows you to set a zone around the crib, which will alert you if anything crosses it.

Lastly, the Lollipop Video Baby Monitor has the ability to add multiple cameras and view them all from one screen. This is one of the top options, especially with its price point.

Best Video Baby Monitor With 2 Cameras [No Wi-Fi]

Babysense 5″ HD Split-Screen Video Baby Monitor with Two Cameras

Babysense 5" HD Split-Screen Video Baby Monitor with Two Cameras and Remote PTZ, Night Light, 960ft Range, Two-Way Audio, 4X Zoom, Night Vision, 4000mAh Battery

Key Highlights:

  • Can pair with up to four cameras.
  • Split-screen view monitors two rooms or angles simultaneously
  • Provides clear 720p images, day and night
  • 360-Degree View with pan, tilt, and zoom
  • Up to 300 meters range for parent unit
  • Two-Way Talk
  • White noise feature for soothing babies to sleep
  • List of lullabies with adjustable run time

As a parent with the need to monitor 2 children, you’ll find this Babysense HD monitor package to be a great option. Equipped with two cameras, it offers a fantastic 360-degree view and excellent picture quality.

It also allows for a split-screen view with controls for pan, tilt, and zoom. If you need to monitor more than two little ones, you can pair the parent unit with up to four cameras.

Communication is a breeze with the two-way talk feature. So, whether you’re in the next room or across the house, you can reassure your baby with the sound of your voice.

The Babysense monitor also comes with a range of lullabies that you can set to run on a timer so that you don’t have to remember to turn it off. This feature, combined with the white noise function, can be a great help in establishing a soothing bedtime routine.

The monitor also offers high/low-temperature alerts, to ensure your baby’s comfort.

As far as battery life, this dual video monitor can handle up to 20 hours of operating time in eco-mode, so you shouldn’t have to worry about the monitor dying in the middle of the night.

In terms of security, the Babysense monitor uses a direct connection powered by 2.4GHz FHSS Technology. Long story short, this video feed won’t be hacked. This gives you peace of mind knowing that your baby’s privacy is protected.

Twin Babies

As with any product, there are a few minor drawbacks. The number 1 thing is the lack of a smartphone app. But, that’s the price you pay for security.

If this is a dealbreaker for you, I’d take a look at adding a second camera to the Nanit Pro. As a matter of fact, I’ve ensured that every baby monitor on this list will allow you to add a second camera.

The only other thing I’ll say about this monitor is that the temperature indicator seems to read inaccurately sometimes and there are limited lullaby choices.

All that said though, the Babysense HD Split-screen baby monitor is a reliable and feature-packed choice for any parent looking to run two baby monitor cameras.

The Cubo blends seamlessly into any nursery with its adorable bird-shaped design. The camera records in 1080p HD using a 135-degree wide-angle lens, providing a clear and detailed view of your baby.

The monitor comes with an AI feature that can immediately detect several issues such as when your baby’s face is covered or alert your phone when your baby rolls over. You can also set the boundaries of their sleep area with a “danger zone”, so they don’t get too close to the edge.

It also alerts you of any coughing or crying and tracks much of this data with an easy-to-read graph along with movement and sleep. It also knows with someone has come in to check on the baby (so you can keep an eye on the babysitter too!).

Best Video Baby Monitor On A Budget

HelloBaby Monitor

HelloBaby Monitor, 5''Display with 30-Hour Battery, Pan-Tilt-Zoom Video Baby Monitor with Camera and Audio, Night Vision, 2-Way Talk, Temperature, 8 Lullabies and 1000ft Range No WiFi, Ideal for Gifts

Key Highlights:

  • Supports multi-camera expandability (up to 4 cameras).
  • Included parent unit with 5″ Display
  • Pan/Tilt with 355° horizontal, 120° vertical rotation and 2X zoom
  • Infrared Night Vision
  • 2-way audio
  • No WiFi – Uses 2.4GHz FHSS, digital encryption
  • Temperature monitor and a selection of 8 lullabies
  • Supports up to 4 cameras

The HelloBaby Monitor is probably your best bet on a budget, offering a range of features while still remaining reasonably priced.

Seriously, this device has a lot going for it. Firstly, it’s completely plug-and-play, so set-up is a breeze. It’s also extremely secure since it’s using a secure connection without WiFi or internet connection.

The 5″ big screen provides a clear and detailed view of your baby. The remote control camera rotates 355° horizontally and 120° vertically, ensuring you can monitor your baby from any angle.

You have great quality night vision as well, which is essential unless your little munchkin is going to be sleeping with the lights on, which I highly doubt.

Other features of the HelloBaby Monitor include two-way audio, room temperature monitor readings, and a library of 8 lullabies. Battery life is excellent also, with up to 20 hours on a charge for video and up to 30 hours for audio-only.

Lastly, it’s expandable with up to four cameras. All these features make it an outstanding deal for a budget baby monitor camera.

While you’re not skimped on quality, there are some downsides in the sense that you get what you pay for as far as features go. There is no mobile app, no sleep tracking, cry alerts, breath tracking, etc.

All-in-all, I would definitely choose this video monitor if I couldn’t afford one of the others on our list!

Do I Really Need A Baby Monitor With A Camera?

While this is ultimately your own decision, I would say unequivocally that you do need a video baby monitor to keep a watchful eye on your little one. The reason being, you just can’t possibly be in the room to watch your baby at all times.

Then, you might say what’s wrong with an Audio baby monitor? Well, nothing is really wrong with them per se, but live video and other sensor technologies can be extremely affordable.

They can also provide much-needed assurance so you can worry about everything else in your busy life. I can tell you from experience, that some extra peace of mind when you’re away from your child handling your household tasks is well worth it.

While audio baby monitors offer a more simplistic approach to monitoring, video monitors provide you a more immersive experience so you can keep a closer eye on your little one.

What Features Are Most Useful In A Video Baby Monitor?

There are a great number of Video Baby Monitors available.  Some of them are amazing, while others have terrible design flaws that I couldn’t begin to recommend.

That being said when choosing which video baby monitors to review, we focused on several key features that we believe are crucial for any good baby monitor camera. These include:

  • Video Quality: We wanted to ensure that the monitors we selected provided clear and high-resolution video, making it easy for you to keep an eye on your little one.
  • Audio Quality: The ability to clearly hear the sounds coming from your baby is essential, and we looked for monitors that offered excellent audio quality.
  • Ease of Use: We understand that you have enough on your plate without struggling to operate complex gadgets. Therefore, we prioritized monitors that are easy to set up and use, with intuitive controls and user-friendly interfaces.
  • Sleep Tracking Features: Some of the more advanced monitors offer sleep tracking features, providing valuable insights into your baby’s sleep patterns. We considered these features a bonus in the monitors we reviewed.
  • Battery Life: A long battery life is crucial if you plan to use the monitor unplugged for extended periods. We looked for monitors that could reliably last through the night and beyond.
  • Security: In today’s digital age, security is a significant concern.  For that reason, we made sure to choose monitors having strong security features to keep your video feed private, including some that do not use Wi-Fi at all.

Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitors – Security and Privacy Concerns

When it comes to baby monitor cameras, especially those that operate over Wi-Fi, security and privacy are paramount. While these devices offer convenience and peace of mind, they can also be vulnerable to hacking if not properly secured.

Wi-Fi baby monitors transmit audio and video signals over your home’s Wi-Fi network. This means that, like any other device connected to the internet, they can be susceptible to unauthorized access if security measures are not in place.

There have been instances where hackers have gained access to baby monitors, leading to serious privacy concerns. To mitigate these risks, there are several steps you can take:

  1. Always change the default password on your baby monitor and Wi-Fi network to a strong, unique password. This makes it harder for potential hackers to gain access.
  2. Regularly update the firmware of your baby monitor. Manufacturers often release updates to fix security vulnerabilities, so keeping your device updated is crucial.
  3. Consider using a monitor that operates on a closed system, meaning it doesn’t connect to the internet and is, therefore, less susceptible to hacking.
  4. Be mindful of the information you share. Avoid using identifiable information or any usernames or passwords associated with the monitor.

Remember, while no system can be completely foolproof, taking these steps can significantly enhance the security and privacy of your Wi-Fi baby monitor.
